My 10 favourite Avengers episodes

"...come to congratulate me on my miraculous recovery? ---" The Ministry have requested Steed takes Elizabeth Loxton somewhere safe until she is to give vital evidence in court. Murder International want to make sure she doesn't get that far so Steed takes her to Fort Steed, the safest place in Britain! Nobody knows where Fort Steed is but someone thinks Tara does. After a whole boatload of drugs and a fake explosion in Steed's fake flat, Tara is led to believe she has been involved in the explosion, which killed Mother! She trusts Major Firth and the Doctor who try to get the information out of her - eventually she realises that she can walk and finds her way to Steed's fake apartment. Its all been a set up - can she get to Steed before they do? |
9 - Wish You Were Here (1969) (Don Chaffey, director) (Colour) "...I've no intention of becoming a stretcher case before lunch ---" Another decision made due to one particular character, Basil Creighton-Latimer, he is wonderful, beautifully dressed, well spoken and completely stupid - just the way I like em! Tara visits her Uncle Charles who has been staying at the Elizabethan Hotel for quite a while - she goes to make sure everything is ok but her Uncle tries to persuade her that he has been held captive all this time. She finally believes him when her car doesn't start, a bucket of water is poured over her and her suit is ruined! The only thing to do now is......escape (Basil to the rescue!) |

"...do tell Mr Benstead that we're ready, I'm absolutely panting at the leash---" That line would never be used in a programme today! Penny is partnered with Steed on the treasure hunt which links Danvers (who gets killed by the badies) and the secret papers, which he very cleverly hid in the treasure chest, the red treasure chest! One long endless car chase indisbursed with fights and sexual innuendos, featuring Norman Bowler (of Emmerdale fame), who is partnered with Mrs Peel, and who also turns out to be the diabolical mastermind! |
7
- Something Nasty In the Nursery "...You're not my nanny? ---" Important people are being turned back into children, information leached from them and then killed! Steed picks up the scent which leads to GONN (Guild of Noble Nannies), where he's introducted to Mr Goat and Nanny Roberts, or is it? A little bit of extra trivia regarding this episode, Penelope Keith gets credited at the end, but unfortunately her scene was left on the cutting room floor! |

"...Damn fool idea having a party on a plane ---" How right you are! You are being flown to an island with 6 other people to carry out an experiment which obviously includes plenty of people getting murdered...oh and Brian Blessed!

- How To Succeed....At Murder "..Ruination to all men! ---" Now who in their right mind would have thought of using a ventriloquists dummy as a villain? Henry and Henrietta Throgbottom, a very odd couple! Henrietta reincarnated by her obsessed husband to front an organisation of secretaries to kill successful business men, ingenious! The best scene by far, in this episode is when Mrs Peel meets JJ Hooter!

"...How extraordinarily tuneful---" The Grand Old Duke of York and that rendition of Green Grow the Rushes from Steed & Mrs Peel never sounded so good What a nasty lot, enticing Steed and Mrs Peel to their house to play mind games with Steed, making him have nasty dreams and tricking Mrs Peel into believing that he is losing his marbles! He soon figures it out though, in genuine Steed-style, without letting on to Mrs Peel, who is desparately trying to work out what is going on. Why Dr. Teasel just couldn't come clean I don't know!
|
3 - All Done With Mirrors (1969) (Ray Austin, director) (Colour) "..table for one....and one ethereal voice ---" Linda Thorson with REAL hair! This is the first episode she appears without a wig after her hair had grown back from the disastrous dye attempt! Secrets are leaking out of the Carmadoc Research Estatblishment and whilst Steed is under house arrest, Tara goes it alone (well, sort of) to figure out what has been occuring! It turns out.....It's All Done With Mirrors! |

"...There's a little disused graveyard to the North of Farnas Green, where a strange mysterious body waits - wrapped up in polythene ---" This was one of the episodes that featured "Lower Storpinging", the other being "A Surfeit of H20" REMAK - Remote Electro-Matic Agent Killer, a machine that no-one can find, a machine that even hghly trained agents are drawn to, a machine that everyone thinks is a man! A superb episode with the addition of Jennifer Croxton as Lady Diana Forbes Blakeney. As Tara is away, Lady Diana steps in to help Steed solve the puzzle involving the dead agents! This episode also features, Anthony Valentine of "Hammer" and "Raffles" fame

1 - Take Over (1969) (Robert Fuest, director) (Colour) "...Hysteria in a man is very unbecoming ---- " How True! This episode is my absolute favourite, Tom Adams plays the dastardly Fenton Grenville, who infiltrates Critchley Manor, the home of Bill & Laura Bassett - who just so happen to be friends with John Steed - how unfortunate for them! Fenton
and his friends hide an ultra long range weapon in one of the bedrooms
and plant phosphor bombs in the necks of Bill, Laura and Sgt Groom.
Sgt Groom tries to make a getaway, but is stopped by Grenville and that
nasty lighter! Direction at its best by Robert Fuest! |
