1963 - 1964 - The Cathy Gale Era

Cathy Gale aka Honor Blackman

1963 saw the beginning of the Avengers, Cathy Gale style.

Steed and Mrs Gale's love/hate relationship is obvious from the outset, but you notice they are always smiling at each other at the end of every adventure.

The storylines get better as the season rolls into 1964, the live recording is prone to less on-screen slip ups, the acting becomes less ham and they introduce actors that are capable of the job - making the whole experience a much better one, alas, The Avengers are properly born!

Steed begins as a dark, mysterious, rather lechous chap, but as the 1964 season gets underway he starts to treat women with a bit more respect and we begin to learn more about his dark past, which isn't that bad after all!

Some of the 1963/64 episodes were remade later on during The Avengers run, namely;

Don't Look Behind You (1963) was remade as The Joker (1967)
The Charmers (1964) was remade as The Correct Way to Kill (1967)
Dressed To Kill (1964) was remade as The Superlative Seven (1967)

Although not exactly the same, some, if not most of the dialogue was retained.

John Steed
